How to Find the Best Long Distance Mover
Finding reliable, professional long distance movers is challenging if you don’t know what to look for in applicants. We recommend figuring out exactly what you want before you look for candidates. Hopefully, the tips below will help you determine exactly what makes a long distance mover a good fit for your relocation project.
Determine Each Candidate’s Experience Level and Offered Services
Movers may have different skill-sets, and it’s important to determine what a candidate has done in the past to know if their skills match what you are looking for. You may want to know if they can provide storage services. Are they experienced as long distance movers or do they mostly do local moves? If they don’t often cross state lines, you should consider other candidates. Do you need them to help pack your things? Do they regularly work with a team? What kind of truck do they usually use? These are all questions you may want to ask in the hiring process.
Define the Minimum Requirements
To deter unqualified candidates from responding to your job posting, we recommend that you be direct with the minimum requirements. Especially if your candidate does not have a lot of prior reviews, you’ll want to make sure any long-distance mover meets the following requirements:
- Good eyesight and the ability to see color.
- Clean driving record.
- A specialty CDL license.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- May need to be a certain age (18 years of age may be the minimum).
- Have previous long distance driving and moving experience.
Note that the requirements may vary for different types of moving jobs and companies. If you’re an individual or business hiring long-distance movers, you likely want the candidate to have a truck and moving equipment on hand. But if you’re a moving company hiring workers, this is probably much less important.
Be Transparent About Expected Hours, Workload, and Pay
We recommend being open about the scope of the job, the hours, and the pay. This sets expectations up front and limits potential conflicts after you hire a candidate. If you’re hiring moving services for one job, how much stuff do you need to move? If the job is an interstate move, how far will the moving crew have to go? If you’re hiring for a long-term position, expected hours and pay are also important to determine up-front, especially because long-distance moving often involves long, unusual hours and potentially difficult schedules.
We hope that these tips are helpful to you throughout the hiring process.
