Good Communication Skills and a Customer Service Mentality

Bartenders need to be able to communicate items on the bar menu, any special drinks available, and tailored recommendations for customers. Not only that, but they should be able to work as part of a team. There will be times when the bar will get busy and they’ll need help – communication is key.

In addition to good communication skills, a bartender must strive to provide great customer service at all times. If the service at the bar is sub-par, this can lead to a negative experience for your guests.

Physical Fitness

Candidates don’t have to be in tip top physical shape to bartend successfully, but they should be able to move around and lift heavy items. There will be times when they will need to transport alcohol or move heavy kegs. They may also be asked to help with other tasks to help service run smoothly.

Great Memory

Bartender candidates do not need to memorize a ton of drink recipes to be successful in their role. However, they should be able to memorize several drink orders at a time and recall pertinent menu items to provide quick and efficient service to your guests. Also, a good memory can come in handy when your business has regulars – it’s nice when the bartender knows a client’s favorite drink.

Experience

Bartenders who don’t have on-the-job experience may have a hard time. But a knowledgeable bartender with years of experience will be better-equipped to hold their own behind the bar. They’ll know how to keep the bar area running smoothly using the proper equipment, mixes, and tools. If your successful bartender candidate will be working at a large venue, a big birthday party, or any event with lots of guests over the age of 21, your best bet is to find one with experience.
