Yield Ratio
Platform FeatureWhat Is Yield Ratio?
Yield ratio is the percentage of candidates who advance from one stage of the hiring process to the next — applications to interviews, or interviews to hires, for example. It's a way of measuring where a hiring funnel gains or loses candidates at each step.
A low yield ratio at a given stage points to a specific bottleneck — whether that's an application process losing qualified candidates early, or an interview-to-hire step where too many candidates fall out before being hired.
Where Yield Ratio Applies in the Hiring Funnel
- Application to interview — What share of applicants are qualified and responsive enough to move to an interview.
- Interview to hire — What share of interviewed candidates are actually hired.
- Offer to start — What share of hired candidates actually show up for their first shift.
Why Yield Ratio Matters
Hourly and shift-based hiring often runs on tight timelines, and a narrow yield ratio at any stage extends how long it takes to actually fill a role. According to the SHRM 2025 Recruiting Benchmarking Report, the average time to fill an open role now runs 42 days or more — a number that a weak yield ratio at any funnel stage will only push higher.
Improving Yield Ratio
- Simplify the application process so qualified candidates aren't lost to friction before they're ever reviewed.
- Surface the most relevant candidates first, rather than reviewing applications in the order they arrive.
- Set clear expectations about schedule and pay early, so candidates who advance are more likely to follow through to a hire and a first shift.
Each stage can have its own yield ratio, and tracking them separately is usually more useful than looking at a single overall conversion number, since it shows exactly where the funnel narrows.
How GigSmart Helps
For on-demand shift work, G-Flex shortens the funnel significantly. Smart Hire AI surfaces best-fit workers first — starting with favorited and repeat workers, then expanding to top-rated qualified workers nearby — so operations leaders are reviewing strong candidates from the start rather than sorting through an unfiltered pool. The business still reviews ratings, experience, and availability, then confirms the hire.
For permanent roles, where yield ratio across a longer interview process is more common, G-Board supports hiring for those positions. And G-Force helps track the core team once new hires are onboarded and scheduled.
