What Is Net Pay?

Net pay is the amount of money a worker actually takes home after all deductions have been subtracted from their gross pay. It's the number that shows up on the paycheck or direct deposit — what you actually get to spend.

Deductions typically include federal and state income taxes, Social Security and Medicare contributions (FICA), health insurance premiums, retirement contributions, and any other withholdings. The gap between gross pay and net pay can be significant, which is why understanding the difference matters for both workers and employers.

How Net Pay Is Calculated

The formula is straightforward: gross pay minus all deductions equals net pay. But the actual calculation involves several layers. Pre-tax deductions (like 401(k) contributions and health insurance premiums) come out first, which reduces taxable income. Then federal, state, and local taxes are calculated on the remaining amount. Post-tax deductions (like Roth contributions or garnishments) come out last.

For hourly workers, gross pay starts with hours worked multiplied by the hourly rate, plus any overtime. For salaried workers, it's typically a fixed amount per pay period. Either way, the path from gross to net involves the same deduction process.

Why Net Pay Matters for Businesses

Getting net pay calculations right isn't optional — it's a legal requirement. Errors in tax withholding, benefits deductions, or overtime calculations can lead to compliance issues, penalties, and unhappy workers.
