24/7 Operations

Scheduling

What Are 24/7 Operations?

A 24/7 operation is a business that runs continuously, with no true "closed" hours. Distribution centers, hotels, senior care facilities, and some manufacturing and transportation operations fall into this category. Work doesn't stop at 5 p.m. or on weekends — it continues through overnight shifts, holidays, and every hour in between.

That distinction matters for how these operations think about staffing. A retail store open 9-to-5 has one core scheduling problem: covering the hours it's open. A 24/7 operation has to solve for coverage across every hour of every day, including the overnight and weekend shifts that are hardest to fill.

Coverage vs. Headcount

The most common mistake in staffing a round-the-clock operation is thinking about it purely in terms of total headcount. Having enough workers on the books doesn't help if they're all scheduled for the same daytime shifts. 24/7 staffing is a coverage problem first — you need the right number of qualified workers in the right shift, on the right day, including the ones nobody wants to work.

Where Coverage Typically Breaks Down

  • Overnight shifts — Fewer workers are available or willing to work them, so gaps show up here first.
  • Weekends and holidays — Core teams often expect this time off, leaving thin coverage exactly when call-outs are hardest to backfill.
  • Shift handoffs — The transition points between shifts are where communication gaps and no-shows do the most damage.
  • Seasonal or demand spikes — A 24/7 operation with variable volume (a distribution center before peak season, a hotel during a conference) needs to flex coverage up temporarily without overstaffing the rest of the year.

Building a Coverage Model

Most 24/7 operations run on a mix of two staffing layers:

A core team foundation

A stable group of workers who cover the predictable, recurring shifts — the backbone of daily operations.

Flex coverage for the gaps

On-demand workers who fill in for call-outs, overnight shifts, seasonal surges, and any coverage gap the core team can't absorb on its own.

How GigSmart Helps

G-Force gives operations leaders the scheduling, time tracking, and geolocation tools to manage a core team across every shift a 24/7 operation runs — including the overnight and weekend coverage that's hardest to plan around.

When gaps still show up, G-Flex connects you with workers on the platform who can pick up open shifts, including last-minute and overnight coverage. Smart Hire AI surfaces best-fit matches first — starting with favorited and repeat workers, then expanding to top-rated qualified workers nearby — so you're reviewing real options fast, not starting from zero every time a shift opens up.

Together, G-Force and G-Flex give a 24/7 operation both a stable base and a way to cover the hours that are hardest to staff.
