MVR Checks for Hiring Drivers

How MVR Checks Work on GigSmart

Motor vehicle record (MVR) checks are available as an optional add-on through GigSmart's Checkr integration — contact us for pricing. You apply them to the driving shifts where you want them rather than across your whole roster.

For delivery and transportation roles, that's usually the distinction that matters: the shift where someone drives your vehicle gets an MVR requirement, and the warehouse shift next to it doesn't.

What an MVR Report Contains

An MVR pulls an individual's driving history from state Department of Motor Vehicles records. It reports on the driver, not the vehicle.

A report typically shows license status, moving violations, accidents, license suspensions or revocations, and commercial driver's license status where applicable. Lookback periods vary by state.

Requiring an MVR on a Driving Shift

You set the requirement when you post the shift. Workers see it before they apply, so the people who match to your job already know a driving record check is part of it.

The check runs through Checkr, with status visible alongside your other shift details. Where you've required more than one type of screening, they can run in parallel.

Screening Options Side by Side

Setting Your Own Driving Standards

What counts as a disqualifying record, how far back you look, and which roles require an MVR at all are decisions for your own legal, HR, and risk advisors. This post doesn't offer guidance on any of it, and no staffing platform should.

What GigSmart provides is the mechanism: the requirement is set per shift, so whatever standard you land on gets applied to the roles you choose and not the ones you don't.

Building a Driver Roster You Can Reuse

When a driver works out, mark them as a favorite. Favorites get priority on your future postings, so the drivers you've already vetted are the ones most likely to pick up your next shift.

At volume, that's what makes screened driving coverage workable — a roster of known drivers rather than a new evaluation every time a route needs covering.
