Background Checks for Staffing Teams: How Screening Works

How Background Checks Work on GigSmart

Background checks are available through GigSmart's Checkr integration, with MVR and drug screening as optional add-ons — contact us for pricing. Screening is something you add to a shift, not a blanket setting: you decide which roles call for it and which don't.

That matters for on-demand and temp staffing, where the same business might need a screened driver on Tuesday and an unscreened event setup crew on Saturday. Applying one standard everywhere costs money on roles that don't need it and slows down shifts that could have filled sooner.

What You Can Screen For

Three screening options are available through the Checkr integration.

ScreeningTypical usePricing
Background checkRoles involving cash, merchandise, or access to secure areasAdds to the per-shift minimum — see below
MVR (motor vehicle record)Any role where the worker drivesOptional add-on — contact us for pricing
Drug screeningRoles where your own policy requires itOptional add-on — contact us for pricing

What Screening Costs on a Shift

G-Flex pricing is published, and adding a background check changes the per-shift minimum rather than introducing a separate vendor bill.

Worker typeService feePer-shift minimum
1099 workers35%$25
1099 workers + background check35%$35
W-2 workers45%$45

Because screening is priced per shift, you can apply it to the roles that warrant it without paying for it across your whole roster.

Deciding Which Roles Need Screening

Screening decisions belong to you and your own advisors — your policies, your risk tolerance, your industry. What the platform does is make the choice granular rather than all-or-nothing.

The roles businesses most often screen are the ones involving cash handling, merchandise, driving, or access to secure areas. The roles they most often don't are short-duration, supervised, general labor positions where the shift needs to fill quickly.

Building a Pool of Screened Workers

When a screened worker performs well, mark them as a favorite. Favorites get priority on your future shifts, so the roster you build is one you already know — which is what makes repeat coverage predictable rather than a fresh evaluation every time.

Custom filters and worker ratings sit alongside screening as ways to narrow who sees your shift. Screening answers one question; track record answers a different one, and most operations end up using both.

FAQs About Background Checks for Staffing

Are all GigSmart workers background checked?

No. Background checks are an optional add-on you apply to the shifts and roles where you want them, through GigSmart's Checkr integration. They are not applied automatically across the worker pool.

How much does a background check add to a shift?

On G-Flex, a 1099 shift with a background check carries a $35 per-shift minimum instead of $25, at the same 35% service fee. MVR and drug screening are separate optional add-ons — contact us for pricing.

Can I run MVR checks for driving roles?

Yes. MVR checks are available as an optional add-on through the Checkr integration — contact us for pricing.

Do I have to screen every role the same way?

No. Screening is applied per shift, so you can require it on roles involving cash, merchandise, or driving, and skip it on roles where your policy doesn't call for it.
