3 Qualities to Look for in a Busboy

Bussers are not just the people who clear food, dishes, and utensils away from customers’ tables. They have regular interactions with guests throughout the dining room, set tables, support wait staff, and more, depending on the restaurant in question. Busser jobs are not easy, and though you can look for prior experience to see if a candidate is a good fit, there are some other qualities you should keep an eye out for too.

Customer Service Skills

While bussers may not spend as much time interfacing with guests as servers, they are still often a major point of contact as diners enjoy their meals. They often bring water to the table and may even take drink orders or initial requests before the primary server arrives, plus address any additional requests throughout the meal. This means they need to be ready and willing to respond to a wide array of personalities with a positive attitude. Customer service roles can be hard, so bussers need to be team players, especially when they are in the dining areas of the restaurant. 

Stamina

Any waitstaff job is physically demanding, and bussing is no exception. Busboys need to clean and clear tables, which often involves lifting large stacks of dishes (or bins or trays filled with dishes and silverware).
