Tax season is upon us, which means it’s time for Gig Workers to make sure they’re reporting their income and properly filing their Federal and State taxes.
While we are not licensed tax professionals, we are here to give you some tips to help you complete your taxes like a pro. As a Worker on the GigSmart platform, you will not be provided a 1099-MISC form. Since payment to Workers is made electronically through GigSmart, a 1099-K is issued by the payment settlement agency. If you didn’t earn enough to receive a 1099-K, you’ll find forms and resources within this blog to assist you in correctly filing your taxes for the 2019 year.
Self-Reporting Your Income
As a Worker on the GigSmart platform, you will need to follow the steps provided by the IRS for Gig Economy Workers. It is always a best practice to keep receipts and records from each Gig you work. The GigSmart app allows you to easily view all of the previous Gigs you have completed.
To view your Gig summaries, follow these instructions:
- Open the Get Gigs app on your mobile phone
- Once logged in, select the menu in the top left corner
- Select the “History” tab
- Select a Gig you’ve completed
- Select the “Gig Summary” tab to see all of the details pertaining to that Gig
From each Gig Summary, you’ll be able to view all your payment history. You will need to add up each Gig to report your total income. You can also keep track of all of the payments you have received by using the Gig Summary emails sent to you at the completion of each of your Gigs.
If you have additional questions about filing your taxes as an independent contractor, visit the IRS’ Gig Economy Tax Center for further instructions and resources.
