The first step of understanding how GigSmart works is becoming familiar with our terminology. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. We created an essential list of keywords and definitions to help our users understand the GigSmart lingo. No matter how you plan to use Get Workers (to find and hire workers) or Get Gigs (to connect to local job opportunities) we recommend you review the following terminology to help set yourself up for success when using one or both of our apps.
Familiarize yourself with these 20 terms to get yourself on the fast-track to hiring smarter or working faster with GigSmart.
1099 and W2s are the different tax forms used to deduct payroll taxes on different types of workers.
- 1099 workers are self-employed independent contractors. They receive pay in accord with the terms of their contract and get a 1099 form to report income on their tax return.
- W2 employees receive a regular wage and employee benefits. The employer withholds income taxes from the employee’s paycheck and has a significant degree of control over the employee’s work.
Criminal background checks compile national and local records of an individual’s criminal misconduct. GigSmart partners with Checkr, a third-party background check provider to complete background checks on GigSmart workers for Verified Gigs. If you opt-in to become a verified worker, you’ll consent to having your background checked. If you get hired for a verified Gig or you choose to hire a GigSmart worker who has passed a Checkr background check, the worker will have no issues with the following:
- Social Security Number (SSN) Trace
- Sex Offender Registry
- Global Watchlist Search
- National Criminal Database Search
These are part-time, full-time, or contract employment opportunities that are listed on the GigSmart job board. These positions are posted directly by the company that is hiring. Workers who are interested in applying can do so through the hiring company’s website or via a specified email address.
GigSmart’s app for individuals who are looking for temporary and permanent work opportunities. Individuals can find temporary work by browsing available hourly Shift Gigs or Full/Part-time positions posted on the GigSmart job board.
GigSmart’s app for requesters who have hiring requests. Requesters can post Shift Gigs to find hourly workers. Requesters in business mode also have the ability to advertise their Full/Part-Time positions on the GigSmart Job Board.
Get Workers Business Mode
Get Workers can be used to hire workers at home or at work. If you’re using Get Workers to hire workers for your business, we recommend using the app in Business Mode so that you can access all of the available features we’ve built to suit our business users. When you indicate you’re looking to hire at work, you will be prompted to provide us with your organization name and industry, and you’ll be using the app in Business Mode. Business Mode allows you to connect an Organization Profile, corporate credit cards, and your business email address to your Get Workers account so you can manage your business Gigs and easily track their related expenses.
Get Workers Personal Mode
Get Workers can be used to hire workers at home or at work. If you’re using Get Workers to hire workers at home, we recommend using the app in Personal Mode so that you can access all of the available features we’ve built to suit our residential users. When you indicate you’re looking to hire at home, you will be prompted to provide us with your personal information (your name and photo), and you’ll be using the app in Personal Mode. All Gig posts you create and publish will display to workers from your name, not an organization. You’ll still be able to add multiple personal payment types to your account.
The Gig clock tracks the time a Shift Gig worker works. Both workers and requesters can start, pause, or end each worker’s Gig clock with a touch of a button.
The gig economy is a labor market consisting of temporary or flexible work opportunities provided by companies or individuals done by the contingent workforce (freelancers, or independent contractors). GigSmart connects those looking to hire (Get Workers requesters) with those looking for work (Get Gigs workers) to temporary opportunities via hourly Shift Gigs.
A person who works temporary jobs typically in the service sector as an independent contractor or freelancer. All GigSmart gig workers find and connect to local opportunities with the Get Gigs app.
GigSmart Job Board
GigSmart’s Job Board is where Get Workers business requesters can post their Full/Part-time opportunities. Get Gigs users can browse and apply for these positions from the GigSmart job board.
Invite Only Shift Gig
When you find a Shift Gig worker(s) you love, you can invite them to apply to your future Shift Gigs instead of posting them for all new applicants to view and apply to.
Managed services is an agreed upon arrangement between GigSmart and a business where all Shift Gigs requests are managed from start to finish by our Staffing Support Team. Click here to learn more about GigSmart’s Managed Services offering.
A Multi-Shift Gig is a Shift Gig posted for multiple dates and/or times. Requesters can easily post a series of the same Shift Gig for the dates and times of their choosing. This makes the process of posting the same shift over and over easier for Get Workers requesters. Workers can easily apply to the Shifts they want to work by checking the boxes of the date and time they are available.
Motor Vehicle Records Check (MVR)
MVR is the report of a person’s driving history. It includes information, such as license expiration, status, license class, endorsements, restrictions, traffic violations, accidents, vehicular crimes, suspensions and more. GigSmart partners with Checkr, a third-party background check provider to complete MRV checks on GigSmart workers for Verified Gigs. If you opt-in to become a verified worker, you’ll consent to having your MVR check ran. If you get hired for a verified Gig or you choose to hire a GigSmart worker with the MVR Gig Add-on, that worker will have passed the MVR check.
Occupational Accident Insurance (OAI)
OAI insures eligible GigSmart Workers for injuries that happen while they are logged into the GigSmart Get Gigs app and performing on-demand Shift Gig services. OAI provides benefits for medical expenses, temporary disability, loss of life, survivor benefits, dismemberment, and paralysis for covered injuries directly caused by an occupational accident.
Requesters are Get Workers users who are looking to hire workers at work or at home.
Shift Gigs are hourly, temporary work opportunities. Get Workers requesters can post Shift Gigs to connect to skilled hourly workers across 3,000 skills. Get Gigs workers can browse and apply to local Shift Gigs easily from the Get Gigs app. All Shift Gigs are worked off an hourly Gig clock and the management and payment of Shift Gig workers is all handled directly through Get Workers and Get Gigs.
Verified Shift Gig
A verified Shift Gig requires eligible workers to pass a background check and/or MVR check in order to apply for the Shift Gig. Requesters who wish to hire Verified workers can select one or both Add-Ons as part of the creation and posting of their Shift Gig. Workers who wish to be hired for Verified Gigs must opt-in to verification through the Get Gigs app. To learn more about worker verification, click here.
