Additional Ways to Find Work in the Wake of COVID-19

Jenay Sellers | Mar 18, 2020

As our country navigates the uncertainties surrounding the impacts of the spread of COVID-19, we know many of you are facing difficult times. At GigSmart, we want to make sure you’re able to lean on us as a staffing resource should you need to look for additional work opportunities to support yourself or your loved ones at any time, but especially over the coming weeks.

One place to see any type of job

Today we are launching the GigSmart Job Board. In addition to connecting you to great short-term (ASAP and scheduled) Gig opportunities, you can now source all types of work from within the Get Gigs app. From on-demand or scheduled shifts to permanent part-time and full-time positions, we aggregate every available, local work opportunity into one single place to make it easier than ever for you to find and apply to work. Using the GigSmart Job Board, you can browse all open jobs in your city, or you can narrow your job search by job title, company name, job industry, or keyword.

If you don’t already have a Get Gigs account, you can create one for free by downloading the Get Gigs app to your mobile phone from the App Store or Google Play Store. To be instantly connected to shifts looking for workers as soon as possible (ASAP) or within the next 30 days, you’ll want to complete your Worker profile, making sure to add one or more relevant Worker Skills. Every time a new Gig post is created with the same Skills you’ve added to your profile, you’ll be notified, and you can choose whether or not you want to apply to work that Gig.

Alternatively, if you’re seeking permanent part-time or full-time work in your area, you can use the GigSmart Job Board to search for, review, and apply to job openings. The GigSmart Job Board is available as part of the Get Gigs app, or you can access it on the GigSmart website by clicking here.

Finding work in the midst of Coronavirus

As we continue to follow trends across our apps to track the effects of COVID-19 on staffing in real-time, we’re seeing a variety of industries impacted. From restaurants, retail, and hospitality — to travel and tourism — many temporary workers and employees are being sent home, called off of work, or displaced from their jobs. At GigSmart, we’re doing everything we can to help businesses seeking skilled, temporary or permanent labor find it. We’re carefully monitoring the announcements from city and state governments to help us prioritize how and where we focus our Staffing Support Team’s efforts to connect people who are looking for work with open jobs.

The updates regarding school closures, bar and restaurant closures, and even shelter-in-place orders across the United States are increasing rapidly. We’ve implemented our own mandatory work from home policies to ensure our employees are practicing social distancing while keeping themselves healthy. Over the past 48 hours, through data trends visible in our apps, we’ve seen demand for Workers in retail/grocery, health services, warehouse, and food-service/delivery increase as businesses pivot to the mandates from their city, county, and state governments.

Similarly, LinkedIn Editor Scott Olster pulled together this quick list of major corporations hiring in the midst of COVID-19. Amazon and lots of larger grocery chains like Safeway, Albertsons, Kroger, Natural Grocers, Costco, Jewel-Osco, and Smiths all stated they were hiring immediately. If you’re looking for available work opportunities in your area, we encourage you to check with grocery stores and markets, warehouse and logistics companies, and/or restaurants who may be looking for delivery drivers and additional staff to help them coordinate takeout service as a result of the suspension of their normal dine-in operations.

And of course, if you aren’t familiar, GigSmart also prides itself on its ability to connect volunteers to volunteer opportunities, free of charge. If you know of an individual or business that needs some additional assistance right now, you can create a Gig post to source volunteers to assist them in a matter of minutes. Volunteers can be sourced for a variety of tasks, from grabbing groceries for a neighbor in need to conducting wellness checks or assisting with the setup of mobile COVID-19 testing centers.
